Although, my grandfather was the original owner, so it was a little less rusty. Since I don’t feel like doing anything today, what did everyone else get as their first car.

Not a bad start. IIRC, you’re around the same age as me, so I’m guessing this photo is circa 2008.

5/10 not a tiempo, but it is a Ford.

The first car I regularly drove was a big blue car n early identical to this (early 90s):
(How much gas did it drink? All of it.)
I still own the first car I chose on my own:

April 2007, very close! Camera quality may also have helped give that away.

One of these, but I won’t disclose which one.

The first car I had was in theory my Rover. Which came down to our place in the back of a Penske truck from Wisconsin in a shambles
. However, as it took many years to rebuild, the first car I actively drove and that was “my car” was an ‘82 Rabbit diesel pickup.

A rusty 1986 GMC S-15 pickup affectionately known as “Junior”. Some of the highlights included:
Robustness - It had already been totaled twice
Thunderous high output 2.8L V6 that made 125 HP when new. At 176k on the clock I think a few ponies had left the stable
Long bed - it could haul everything but ass
It could go 0 to 60
I once got it up to 83 going downhill with the tailgate open
It didn’t have an awful vibration at 45 MPH - it was the automatic massage seating turning on , a luxury feature
Open header s when it decided to rid itself of it’s exhaust system from the cat to the tailpipe . Because race truck!
The flaking rust and occasional parts falling off just meant it was constantly improving it’s power to weight ratio. Because race truck!

Identical to this, but black. ‘87, 300 I-6, 4 speed, 4x4. I found it out back behind the local grain elevator with severe front end damage. Picked it up in December of 200...1? Spent the winter fixing it up, got it painted in the spring, drive it for a couple months and sold it. I loved it, but it got atrocious fuel economy. 7-8 mpg average with an all time high of 11. I wish I had been better at diagnosing EEC-IV EFI at the time.

I wanted a first gen Acura MDX, but my mom said I had to get something nearly new with a warranty, so I got a green year old 2012 Kia Soul. It was mechanically reliable, but in less than a year of owning it, I got hit in the front, the divers side and the back. After the hit from behind by an Xterra going 45, I got it fixed and traded it in on a mistake.

What did you trade it in on?

I actually really loved the truck. It had been a company truck at my dads work, and their delivery guy totaled it when it was a month old. My dad bought it off the insurance company for really cheap and he and his buddy who owned a body shop rebuilt it with used parts over the course of a few months. Later my dad hit 2 deer with it and insurance wanted to total it, but he and his friend rebuilt it again.
One weirdly good thing, a huge positive that I accidentally omitted, was that it handled surprisingly well . During the first rebuild my dad put in polyurethane suspension bushings, and I think he added a leaf in the back. It was super stiff and there was almost no slop in the steering.
He also put a set of ‘67 Chevelle Ralleye wheels on it. Junior looked boss.
It was also really useful for doing work around the house. My big chore as a teenager was to mow the grass (bagging all of it) and then take all the yard trimmings and sticks and things to the dump. I have lots of fond memories of do ing slidey boys around the dirt roads on the back side of the landfill.

I had this sweet 2001 Dodge Stratus V6 handed down by my father. Surprisingly, I enjoyed this machine, it was a decent first car (minus the motor). First car I learned how to correct/polish fogged headlights, fix rock chips, & truly care more about.
It wasn’t fast but the V6 had decent power and sounded good. Sadly these motors were plagued with oil sludge issues and we didn’t know this until it was too late.

A stepside too? Back in the day my dad had an F150 stepside, I6/300 manual, but I think it was an 85. Uncommon truck. His was kind of a bronze/gold color.

A new 2014 Hyundai Elantra limited. It was a joint Hyundai/Subaru showroom. I went in looking for a base model F orester, and was struck by the color and the features per dollar on the Elantra in the showroom. That car wound up going through two transmissions and had tons of other issues. Ended up getting it lemon lawed less than a year later with less than 10k miles , and got my Outback.

I’d like to keep it as long as possible, it’s one reason I got my 328i was so I didn’t put the miles on the M3.

1989 Chevy Beretta GT:
Looked almost exactly like this. PO had done a bunch of “mods” to it. Was actually quite fun for the short time I had it. I traded it on a 1989 Chevy 1500 (like this) :
This truck was an odd combo, special ordered by a local farmer. Regular cab, short bed, 2wd, 305TBI, heavy duty 5-speed, 4.56 posi. Owned it a little over a year, it had 275k on it when I got it, it used more oil than gas ( despite it’s 6 mpg on a good day ), and I think I put a pair of tires on it roughly once a week.
Strangely, both were also blue.

Surprised neither was a van.

Yep! If I hadn't had a girlfriend that lived 30 miles away I might have held on to it longer. It was a super nice truck by the time I sold it after putting months and months worth of work into it.

High quality syn thetic oil, Mopar filter, changed every 3k they go like tanks. They also do very well with intake/exhaust/cat delete/tune.

The vans didn’t come til my 3rd daughter actually. Always liked “odd/unloved” stuff, but I honestly never thought I’d own a van.

Ha, too late now! I haven’t heard to much positive about the 2.7, but you would be the one to know!
I really wanted to do an exhaust as the stock one sounded decent, but sadly it went away before that.

I know nothing of them......... https://oppositelock.kinja.com/things-once-owned-1831118890
The 2.7L is directly as good as the people who own it and likes to be wrung out often. They sound amazing with exhaust, get decent fuel economy, and put down good power with a few mods. Ours took us 217k miles with zero drivetrain issues ( really very few issues at all ).

Yep 390, always got between 10-12 mpg no matter how you drove it. Very cold blooded, but it would spin the wheels with ease. Mine had different (not 7 litre style) hubcaps from the pictured car, but same color combo.

Not bad. I never got into that, as I lack space, tools, and know-how. When I was a kid, my dad would buy a cheap and cheerful old car (usually 60s Fords), drive it for awhile (he disliked 80s and early 90s era modern cars) and profit. That’s how the Galaxie came into the family.
![]() 06/07/2019 at 22:31 |

M3s do seem to have a cult, you’ll have a special interest car if anything, especially if you preserve it and keep it stock. It’s those third owners and beyond who seem to mess things up.
![]() 06/07/2019 at 23:44 |

I can relate to your dad... I hate most anything built in the last 10-15 years. That's the nice part about living where cars don't rust!
![]() 06/07/2019 at 23:57 |
|
You should have seen this region 25-30 years ago. 60s material was everywhere, virtually rust-free, and inexpensive.
My dad disliked most moderns, until minivans came around, then he slowly moved into the modern age. His last new car was a Town and Country, which he loved.

On the bright side, I got back the full price minus $1k for the 10k I put on it. I wound up having more money saved up and was able to get a much nicer Subaru than what I would have originally gotten.

I’m the second owner, and apart from some OEM black kidneys, it’s bone stock.
